This bizarre Saturday Night Live sketch cast Sam Rockwell and Kyle Mooney as life-size “My Drunk Boyfriend” dolls, which are nightmarish creations.

This Saturday Night Live skit cast Sam Rockwell as the nightmarish “My Drunk Boyfriend” doll. SNL has gifted the world with an almost unending line of comic talent, from Chevy Chase to Eddie Murphy, Kristen Wigg, Will Ferrell and many, many more. It’s been running for over 40 years so far, and while it’s had some peaks and valleys over the years, it remains a comic institution.

Saturday Night Live has had particularly good fortune with producing viral sketches in the last decade. The Lonely Island produced some of their best work for the show, including “The Shooting,” “I’m On A Boat” and “Jack Sparrow ft. Michael Bolton.” Other examples of skits that went viral including Ryan Gosling’s “Papyrus” or the truly bizarre “Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins.)”

In 2018 the beloved Sam Rockwell (Moon) guest-hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live, where he received positive reviews but also dropped an (accidental) f-bomb performing one of the sketches. One highlight skit from his episode was “My Drunk Boyfriend,” where he and Kyle Mooney portray life-sized dolls designed to simulate a drunken mess of a boyfriend for lonely women.

These nightmarish creations move in jerky motions and are programmed with dozens of unique phrases and behaviors. These include randomly crying over a deceased relative, getting up in the middle of the night to pee in a hamper, taking one last beer to bed or talking about quitting their job. Saturday Night Live’s “My Drunk Boyfriend” also gives Sam Rockwell and Kyle Mooney an eerie doll look, and both are clearly having a good time putting on their best drunk dude voice.

Saturday Night Live’s “My Drunk Boyfriend” isn’t necessarily one of the show’s best recent sketches, but it mines a good deal of humor out of behavior that’s all too relatable, and at a shade over two minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Given the f-bomb incident, it’s unknown if Sam Rockwell will be invited back to host another SNL, which would be a pity as his episode was one of the better received of season 43. This series also saw the one-off animated special The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special air, which attempted to expand upon Tom Hanks’ title character and his dancing skeletons. Sadly, the special proved the odd magic of the original sketch was impossible to recapture, and not even Peter Dinklage appearing as the narrator could help.
