Wrocław, a city in western Poland, has named a square after poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Sharing the news on social media, son and actor Amitabh Bachchan said it was a moment of pride for their family and the Indian community in Wroclaw to learn of the news on the occasion of Dussehra.

“The City Council of the City of Wroclaw, Poland, has decided to name a Square after my Father.. there could not have been a more apt blessing on Dushhera than this.. a moment of extreme pride for the family, for the Indian community in Wroclaw.. and India.. JAI HIND (sic),” Bachchan wrote on Instagram.

In July, students of the University of Wrocław paid tribute to the veteran Hindi poet by reciting his poem Madhushala on the roof of the institute.

In 2019, the Mayor of Wroclaw had declared Amitabh the Ambassador of the City of Wroclaw. He had visited Wrocław, a UNESCO City of Literature, the same year when his father was honoured at one of the oldest churches of Poland. He attended the honorary event organised to pay homage to his father. A commemorative sculpture with an image of Senior Bachchan was unveiled at the centre of Wroclaw to honour the legendary Hindi poet.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a Padma Bhushan awardee, passed away in 2003.
