Wonder Woman 1984’s toys and merchandise deals have been affected by the DCEU movie’s delays due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

Moviegoers aren’t the only ones affected by Wonder Woman 1984‘s many delays; its toys and merchandise deals have been impacted as well. The upcoming film is one of the DC Extended Universe’s most anticipated. However, like other movies in the series, Wonder Woman 1984 has faced delays due to the coronavirus. Prior to the pandemic, the sequel was set to release in June 2020. When theaters began to close in March, Wonder Woman 1984 was pushed to August and eventually October. Though there was hope the film would be able to release this fall, it was delayed again, this time to December. Wonder Woman 1984 is holding onto that release date for now, but it seems likely it will be pushed again.

Wonder Woman 1984 is far from alone in its many delays. In fact, the majority of films expected to come out this year won’t. This has had a major impact on all facets of the movie industry, including marketing. For example, MGM was expected to lose $30 million from No Time to Die‘s initial delay, partly because it was already well into an expensive promotional campaign. Superhero movies in particular rely on one key aspect of marketing: toys and merchandise deals related to the movie. Unfortunately, Wonder Woman 1984‘s merchandise has been a topic of conversation this year primarily because some of it offers spoilers on a movie that hasn’t been released.

Per Variety, licensing and consumer products have been immensely affected by many movie delays, including Wonder Woman 1984‘s. Specifically, a Cheetah doll by Mattel showing the character in her final form should have been timed with the movie’s release to boost its rollout. Instead, the doll, and numerous other toys and merchandise items, debuted well ahead of the movie. Due to issues like this one, the licensing industry on its own will likely see a revenue decrease of 21% this year.

It’s an interesting time for the film industry, making studios examine their relationships with theater chains, as well as toy and merchandise companies. What’s more, at this point, the entertainment world is far from done feeling the impacts of the coronavirus. The pandemic will have a ripple effect on Hollywood for years to come. With toys and merchandise deals in particular, it’s hard to know the lessons the industry will take away from this year. Those making and selling movie products may realize just how dependent they are on the accompanying films to sell that merchandise. Likewise, studios may learn the power of toys and other products, especially when they have the potential to spoil plot points or other key moments.

In the case of Wonder Woman 1984, toys and other merchandise may have revealed some aspects of the movie Warner Bros. and DC wished they could have kept secret. However, those products also kept fans talking about Wonder Woman 1984, even as it was delayed again and again. All told, both those who make movies and those who create and sell the merchandise that goes along with them benefit from the relationship.
