Arrow star Stephen Amell isn’t happy about The CW trying to change the Arrowverse name to The CWverse after he helped launched the universe.
Arrow star Stephen Amell isn’t happy about The CW’s decision to change the Arrowverse name to the CWverse. Amell helped launch the channel’s interconnected DC universe nearly a decade ago when Arrow began in 2012. The show arrived at the perfect time and captured the attention of many, with Amell’s portrayal of Oliver Queen leading the way. With the success of Arrow, The CW began developing other DC-related shows not too long after and used Arrow as a backdoor pilot for The Flash by having Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen debut there.
Over the last several years, the Arrowverse has continued to grow. Legends of Tomorrow became another spinoff, and Supergirl joined The CW universe. Thanks to the power of the multiverse, even Black Lightning was brought into the fold, while Batwoman became the latest addition to the lineup. All of this is happening even though Arrow came to an end after eight seasons when its final episode aired at the beginning of 2020. The popular DC universe wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Arrow, which is why many found it odd when The CW suddenly began changing the branding to call it “The CWverse.”

Not only did fans of the Arrowverse not respond well to this attempted name change, but Stephen Amell agrees. Amell recently appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast to discuss many topics, and the Arrowverse name change did come up. At first, Amell said that the possibility of the Arrowverse being called The CWverse “f***ing pissed me off [laughing].” He thinks it came from a marketing department trying to create content when they don’t have anything to show. But, he went on to explain where his frustration with the decision comes from.
I don’t care if they stop calling it the Arrowverse. But you don’t need to come up with a new name. I’m allowed to complain about that a little bit.
It is understandable why Amell is upset about the Arrowverse name change at this stage. Arrow hasn’t even been off the air for a year, but the marketing machine is already trying to seemingly diminish its importance. The entire CWverse, if that is what the network ends up calling it moving forward, only exists because of Arrow. It’s impossible not to attribute some of this success to Amell then. And even though Arrow is done, the character’s impact will continue to live on, and characters from the show might have futures elsewhere, such as the Green Arrow and The Canaries spinoff.
The CW hasn’t made any change from the Arrowverse official, but Amell’s suggestion that they could simply drop the title and not rename it is a better option. The CWverse doesn’t immediately convey that it is the name of the channel’s DC universe. Instead, it seemingly indicates that everything on The CW is part of a single universe. If The CW doesn’t want to use the Arrowverse branding anymore since Arrow is over, that’s fine. But, it will likely continue to be the name that fans use to refer to the universe. And since Amell doesn’t appear to be completely over the character after considering doing Arrow season 9 due to the pandemic, there’s always the chance he could return down the road.
