The Meg 2 Updates: Release Date & Story Details

Will The Meg 2 happen? If so, when will it release and what will it be about? Here’s everything we know about the shark sequel starring Jason Statham.

Here’s everything we know about The Meg 2, a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster starring Jason Statham. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, The Meg mostly received mixed reviews, but marked an exciting new addition to the Sharksploitation sub-genre. As a Chinese-American co-production, the film also introduced actress Li Bingbing to many Western moviegoers for the first time. Now, it appears that one of cinema’s most polarizing filmmakers is on board for The Meg 2.

In The Meg, Statham portrays a disgraced rescue diver named Jonas Taylor. Five years after an underwater tragedy, Jonas spends his time swigging beer in Thailand and thinking about the past. Meanwhile, Taylor’s ex-wife, Lori, participates in a groundbreaking mission in the Western Pacific Ocean and comes face-to-face with an unidentified creature that Jonas had spoken about five years prior. Members of the Mana One research facility enlist Statham’s character for an especially dangerous mission in previously unexplored waters, as their target is a megalodon — a shark species that had allegedly gone extinct two million years before. The Meg is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.

The Meg kills off several characters, including a billionaire who mistakenly identifies a whale as one of two identified megalodons. In the final act, Jonas manages to defeat the big bad and then faces another huge challenge — he must confront his romantic feelings for colleague/love interest Suyin (Li). Here’s everything we expect for The Meg 2.

The Meg 2 Is Happening

Jason Statham in The Meg

The Meg 2 has been in the works since October 2018, essentially right after the original movie released. By early 2019, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed that a script was in the works, and the sequel gained momentum in October 2020, when Ben Wheatley was announced as The Meg 2 director. The English filmmaker is best known for helming horror movies such as Kill List and Sightseers. In recent years, Wheatley has explored other genres with High-Rise, Free Fire, and the 2020 Netflix adaptation, Rebecca.

The Meg 2 Release Date

If The Meg 2 follows the original film’s production timeline, it won’t release for a couple years. With a script in place and Wheatley ready to direct, shooting will presumably begin by mid-2021. Assuming that the visual effects will be bigger and better, post-production will probably take up most of 2022. We’ll predict that The Meg 2 will release as a summer blockbuster in 2023.

The Meg 2 Cast

Jason Statham in The Meg

Statham is set to reprise his role in The Meg 2, and will reportedly be involved in the overall creative process. The supporting cast hasn’t officially been announced, but much of the “key talent” is expected to return. In that case, The Meg 2 will presumably feature the aforementioned Li, along with Ruby Rose and Page Kennedy, among others.

The Meg 2 Story

Li Bingbing in The Meg

The Meg plays out as a redemption story for Statham’s Jonas, who re-gains the trust of his colleagues and develops a strong bond with Li’s Suyin and her daughter Meiying (Sophia Cai). After defeating the megalodon, Taylor clearly shows interest in Suyin but also seems to know that he might not be ready for a relationship. Much of the film involves Jonas actively putting his life in danger to save others, and he even plans to sacrifice himself near the end. For The Meg 2, the central conflict will revolve around sharks, of course, but expect the subtext to center on the psychology of Statham’s character and how that affects his relationship with the smitten Suyin.
