The New ‘Marvel Trinity’ is Finally Official

Marvel’s newest trinity: Ms. Marvel, Nova and Miles Morales are now official, and just in time for the events of “Outlawed.”

Spoilers for Champions #2 ahead!

The new Marvel “trinity” of Nova, Ms. Marvel, and Miles Morales is finally official. In Champions #2 by writer Eve L. Ewing (Ironheart), artists Simone Di Meo (Old Man Logan) and Bob Quinn (Captain America)  and colorist Federico Blee (Snake Eyes: Deadgame), the new trinity finds themselves questioning their roles as heroes before fighting C.R.A.D.L.E. agents.

These three characters represent a new wave of young heroes at Marvel. Over the past decade, the publisher has introduced a host of new teen heroes, including Nova, Morales, and Ms. Marvel, along with characters such as America Chavez, Moon Girl, and Ironheart. These young heroes have taken their place among the greats of the Marvel Universe; now they find themselves in the midst of “Outlawed,” an event in which these teen heroes find their activities declared illegal by the government, forcing them to go underground or give up their identities altogether. Ironically, this law was brought because of Ms. Marvel’s secret identity Kamala Khan; when her school was attacked, the Champions, a team of teen heroes, were on the scene. The school was destroyed, Kamala was hurt and the Champions were blamed. Her image was plastered over the media, leading to calls to ban teenage heroes, under the banner of “Kamala’s Law.”

To enforce Kamala’s Law, the government set up a SHIELD-type organization called C.R.A.D.L.E, headed up by former SHIELD operative Dum Dum Dugan. In the previous issue, the agency captured some of the young heroes and are forcing them into a reeducation center. Meanwhile, the new trinity tries to convince Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, to join the fight. The young heroes are then ambushed by C.R.A.D.L.E. agents at the issue’s end.

Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Miles Morales form the heart and the soul of the Champions, and indeed this new wave of teen heroes as a whole. They were among the first of this wave, so it is only fitting they are its leaders. In the issue, a fan on Twitter called the three a trinity, a sign they are connecting with fans.

When fans think of a trinity at Marvel, their thoughts probably turn to Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor; indeed, these three powerhouses lead the future Marvel Universe. A new generation of heroes is emerging, and it is not beyond the realm of possibility to see this generation one day supplanting the originals, and they will need their leaders and that is where this new trinity comes in. Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales, and Nova have established themselves as those leaders, and the young heroes of the Marvel Universe are all the better for it.
