The Nintendo Switch has just had its best October yet, with milestone-breaking sales making it the second-best October for console sales ever.
The Nintendo Switch continues its massive success in the US with another big month as it posts its strongest October sales yet, only a few days before the launch of the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. The Switch has been incredibly successful for Nintendo since it launched back in 2017. Last August, the console surpassed the lifetime sales of the NES and is on its way to catch up with the sales of the 3DS. The Nintendo Switch has also surpassed the lifetime sales of its most recent predecessor, the Wii U, which was considered a relative failure for the company.
This year has been particularly successful for the Nintendo Switch, partially due to the lockdowns imposed in relation to the ongoing pandemic. Earlier this year, the console faced supply shortage issues amid rising sales due to the pandemic and some of its games, particularly Animal Crossing: New Horizons, saw incredible popularity, surpassing sales projections to sell over 22 millions copies and becoming the 2nd best-selling game on the Switch behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

In a press release from Nintendo, the company says that the Switch sold over 735,000 units in the US in October alone. According to the announcement, it’s the second-highest October sales of any video game console ever, with the first being the Wii’s sales back in October 2008, which numbered over 807,000 units. The Switch’s October sales also mark the 23rd consecutive month that the console retains its spot as the best-selling video game console in the US. Additionally, the Switch has sold more than 22.5 million units in the US since its release, while it has sold more than 63 million units worldwide.
It looks like Nintendo is setting up for a successful November as well as it announced a new Switch bundle for Black Friday. Apart from the console itself, the new bundle will include a download code for the digital version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe along with a three-month individual membership to Nintendo Switch Online, which will allow users to play online, all for $299.99. Those who want to avoid the Black Friday rush will be able to get the bundle earlier than the annual event as it will be available starting on November 22.
The success of the Nintendo Switch has seemingly revived Nintendo after it struggled with the Wii U for several years. The Switch’s success may be attributed to its hybrid nature, being both a portable and home console. While the Switch still has a ways to go before it catches up with Nintendo’s other best-selling consoles of all time, the Wii and Game Boy, but it’s definitely on track to do that with all the milestones it’s breaking.
