Netflix has renewed its original comedy Space Force for a season 2 and announced the show will undergo a “creative revamp”.
Netflix has renewed its original comedy Space Force for a season 2. Space Force premiered in May and quickly soared to become one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. However, critics were less receptive to the series and thought it could use some work if it were to be renewed.
THR confirms that Space Force will be returning for a second season. However, there will likely be notable differences between seasons 1 and 2. The show will undergo a “creative revamp” under the supervision of showrunner Greg Daniels (The Office.) Norm Hiscock (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) will join Daniels as a showrunner. Jimmy O. Yang, who plays Dr. Chan Kaifang, will also join the writing staff. The TV series has also moved its filming location from Los Angeles to Vancouver.
Space Force is set to start filming in 2021. It currently does not have a release date. In addition to Steve Carrell (The Office) in the lead role, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, Diana Silvers and Yang will return as co-stars. While the cast and crew of Space Force clearly have a lot to prove for season 2, it is nothing the former The Office team are unfamiliar with. In fact, The Office almost wasn’t renewed for season 2, but after a major creative upheaval, the show survived and became one of the most successful sitcoms of all times.
Space Force stars Carell as Gen. Mark R. Naird, a decorated pilot who is tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces: Space Force. Despite his skepticism about the job, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado, where he and a colorful team of scientists are tasked by the White House with achieving total space dominance.
