Release Date, Story, Will It Happen?

Christopher Landon’s 2020 horror/comedy, Freaky, set up a subtle hint that could lead to a sequel, but will Freaky 2 happen? Here’s what we know.

Director Christopher Landon’s Freaky released in theaters on November 13, 2020, but will there be a Freaky 2 in the future? If so, when could it release and what might the story be about? Here’s everything we know so far.

Blumhouse Productions teamed up with Landon for 2017’s Happy Death Day and its 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U. While there’s been discussion of a Happy Death Day 3, mixed reports have suggested that the project may or may not happen. With the COVID-19 pandemic causing numerous production issues and many 2020 movies being delayed, Freaky releasing in theaters is a gamble, and its chances at a sequel will likely depend on the movie’s initial success. However, Landon’s outing is a charming, bloody affair that explores the aftermath of high school student Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) swapping bodies with a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Inspired by the story Freaky Friday and drawing elements from the Friday the 13th franchise—and other classic ’80s slasher movies—Freaky is a coming of age tale with both heart and gore, which would make it a standout offering within the horror genre in any other year.

Though the fate of Freaky is largely unknown, as even successful movies and TV shows have been outright canceled or put on hold indefinitely due to the pandemic, Landon left a subtle hint in the ending as how the single endeavor could become a larger franchise, or at least get a sequel. Just like Happy Death Day—which has been confirmed to exist in the same universe as Freaky—the horror/comedy provides smart commentary not only on prominent social issues important to today’s youth, but avoids many stale, formulaic tropes while still paying homage to all those that came before. If Freaky 2 does get the green light from Blumhouse, here’s what to expect.

As of this writing, there’s no news of a Freaky 2 being in the works. Landon has worked with Blumhouse Productions before, and given the studio’s release model, there’s a good chance that there will be a second outing if the first movie is successful enough. Blumhouse is known for making movies on a low budget that see impressive returns even if the films themselves aren’t wildly successful. For example, Happy Death Day earned an impressive $125.5 million at the box office on a budget of $4.8 million. Freaky likely won’t pull those numbers, as theaters have been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus, however if critics enjoy Landon’s efforts—and fans rally behind the movie—a sequel is likely.

Freaky 2 Release Date

Freaky 2 doesn’t yet have a release date attached. However, Blumhouse Productions is known for quick filming and production schedules, and with their commitment to continuing despite COVID-19 changing up day to day operations, it’s likely they’ll still continue releasing new movies in 2021 and 2022. This works for Freaky 2 because, if the sequel is green-lit sometime in 2021, it will probably release in 2022. Freaky was first announced in August 2019, began production in October 2019 and wrapped filming in December 2019. Post-production was likely hindered significantly by lockdowns, which began in March 2020, which is why it took a year to release theatrically. We expect this trend to continue, with Freaky 2 probably set to release about a year after the sequel is first announced.

WARNING: Major spoilers for Freaky ahead

Because the Blissfield Butcher is dead at the end of Freaky, Vaughn will likely not return to reprise his role. However, the survivors of the movie—Millie, Josh (Misha Osherovich), Nyla (Celeste O’Connor), and Booker (Uriah Shelton)—could all return. The ending of Freaky leaves the mystical dagger that caused the body swap to occur still in play; if someone managed to acquire the weapon, it could cause the events to repeat. Happy Death Day 2U handled the sequel treatment in an interesting route, combining time-travel and sci-fi elements to its slasher backbone; Freaky 2 could do the same thing. By exploring the dagger’s mythology in greater detail, a sequel could serve as a prequel in the franchise or even see a different villain come to power by adopting a form that’s equally unlikely to be construed as dangerous.
