Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ships with an extremely overpowered MP5 AMG, which hasn’t been properly balanced despite the recent open beta.
It appears that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launched with an extremely overpowered MP5 SMG, which gives players flashbacks of other unbalanced guns in the series. It’s actually the second time in a row when the famous German sub-machine gun has been this broken, with the previous overpowered iteration being featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (and Warzone).
Back in 2019, the MP5 was among the best guns to use in both Modern Warfare and Warzone thanks to a completely unbalanced 10mm rounds attachment. It not only gave the weapon an extra punch by increasing its damage output, but also drastically increased its effective range, which ultimately made the SMG better than many assault rifles. The attachment was so unbalanced that it ended up in almost every suggested loadout for the gun.

Now, the notoriously broken MP5 returns with yet another annoying list of unbalanced features, only this time, the weapon seems to be worse than ever. Players like 100 Thieves’ founder Nadeshot are claiming the gun is among the most overpowered in the history of Call of Duty. The problem introduced in Black Ops Cold War is its overall unfair behavior. This is best demonstrated by a short video clip courtesy of Reddit user icelz who got killed by an MP5-wielding opponent in less than a second from midrange. The player wasn’t even able to respond to the threat – not to mention take cover. In the video, it is clearly shown how broken the gun is with the accuracy being unprecedented for an SMG. With its relatively fast rate of fire, MP5 turns into a laser beam capable of immediately wiping people. At close ranges, the situation gets considerably worse, as players report being killed with one-tap headshots on sight.
MP5 in Cold War might be the most over powered SMG in Call of Duty history. That, or weapon and leveling progression takes so long that there isn’t a ton of gun variety in pubs.

It is worth noting that the previous installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (along with Warzone) suffered from the regular introduction of overpowered weapons as well, but arguably none of them were as broken as Black Ops Cold War’s MP5. One of the most recent examples has seen the extremely powerful JAK-12 Shotgun being nerfed in just two weeks after being added to the game. Again, it was a matter of unlockable attachments that turned an otherwise good shotgun into a completely unfair trolling weapon. With extended mag and frag rounds, the JAK-12 was capable of destroying whole squads.
It’s not like Treyarch didn’t have enough time to focus on balance issues and avoid introducing an overpowered gun – after all, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was treated to a whole round of an open multiplayer beta. In that regard, the situation with a clearly broken MP5 is even more infuriating. Obviously, such a vocal fan backlash will force the development team to fix the weapon with the nearest patch, although it would have been greatly appreciated if the necessity to nerf an unbalanced SMG hadn’t occurred in the first place spoiling the fun for may players.
