Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players on the PlayStation 5 may have actually be mistakenly playing the PS4 version of the game all along.

As it turns out, players of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on the PlayStation 5 may be accidentally playing the PS4 version of the game. The latest entry in the long-running Call of Duty franchise was released just a few days ago and is available on five platforms as well as a number of editions, some of which come with free upgrades to the game’s more impressive versions on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s ostensibly one of the biggest launches for a Call of Duty game with the large number of platforms it’s available on at release.

Launching a new game on brand-new platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is expectedly not going to be all sunshine and rainbows as players have already run into a few issues when playing the game on either of the next-generation consoles. Some Xbox Series X players have reported crashing, while others have encountered random DualSense controller disconnects on the PS5.

Eurogamer report explains that those who choose the Download All option after purchasing the game’s Ultimate Edition or Cross-Gen Bundle from the PlayStation Store, which downloads both the PS5 and PS4 version of the game to the console, may be mistakenly playing the wrong version of the game, as the PS5 may default to the PS4 version when the play button is pressed. To avoid this, users can select the three dot icon and manually choose the PS5 version of the game. According to Eurogamer, players can confirm the change if the user interface briefly refreshes after which the PS5 version of Black Ops Cold War will be the default when play is pressed. Afterwards, players can uninstall the PS4 version of the game to avoid the mistake altogether as well as free up storage space on the console, as the game install takes up a lot of space.

Additionally, Eurogamer also reports that PS5 users have encountered adjacent issues with the game as those who only have the PS4 version of the game installed on their console are running into a problem that prevents them from downloading the PS5 version unless a factory reset is first performed.

Big video game releases are somewhat already expected to have issues here and there and that goes double for games releasing on brand-new platforms such as the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Hopefully, Sony and Microsoft are able to work together with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War developers Treyarch and Raven Software to resolve the issues players are facing with the game on the next-generation consoles.
