Black Widow star O.T. Fagbenle shares new details about his character Mason, including the circumstances of his relationship with Natasha Romanoff.
Black Widow star O.T. Fagbenle teases the romance between his character Mason and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). The long-awaited Black Widow will delve into Natasha’s pre-Avengers life as a Russian assassin, something MCU fans have long wondered about. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha will set off on her own mission to confront the Red Room that trained her, as well as the family she left behind. Black Widow also promises to fill in key parts of Nat’s life, from the long-debated Budapest incident with Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to her upbringing, of which very little is known.

Much of Black Widow‘s supporting cast has already been discussed at great length, from Natasha’s onetime sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) to her mentors/parents Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour). Fans even know some major details about the villain Taskmaster, save for his identity. One person who has escaped most of the scrutiny, however, is Fagbenle’s Mason. Very little has been revealed about Mason beyond the fact that he is one of Natasha’s former allies and has a deeper interest in her.
Finally, Fagbenle has pulled back the curtain a bit more on Mason and Natasha’s relationship. As part of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book, Fagbenle revealed some key details about Mason, namely that he’s a “finder for people who aren’t so affiliated with armies, like people who are part of the underworld.” Mason’s relationship with Natasha is through that kind of work, though Fagbenle hinted there’s more to it. “There’s a sense that there’s more to their relationship than it being purely work-related, so that’s always in the mix,” he said. Additionally, Fagbenle shared where Mason fits into Black Widow‘s story, stating:
Mason’s story starts when Natasha is trying to escape, and she needs a place to hide out. So we hang out for a little bit. And then later on, when she gets in trouble, she calls me up again. I help her out with a Chinook. If you need a helicopter, I’m the guy to ask, and then again every time she’s in trouble, she calls me.
While this seems like a beneficial relationship for Natasha, Fagbenle also seemed to indicate there could be reason for discord between the two. “Natasha definitely takes advantage of the opportunities for him to provide certain things- she never really pays with cash and she doesn’t have credit either. She’s always like, ‘Yeah, put it on my tab.’ It’s a pretty long tab by now! I’m a giver,” Fagbenle teased. Whether this means there’s actual tension between Mason and Natasha remains to be seen, but it could support the popular fan theory that Mason is actually Taskmaster. Marvel hasn’t confirmed it one way or another. Still, it’s nice to get some new information about Black Widow‘s least-visible character, particularly since the film is still months away.
Black Widow had originally been scheduled for release in May of this year, but the coronavirus pandemic effectively slashed Marvel’s plans for all of 2020. As a result, Black Widow isn’t slated for release until May 2021. To help tide them over, several character and plot teases have emerged in recent weeks, including the details about Mason. While they can’t replace the feeling of actually seeing Black Widow come to life, they’ll help keep excitement up as audiences await its arrival. Perhaps Mason will be featured in the next Black Widow trailer – now that would be quite interesting.
