Before his HBO Max four-part project was even released, director Zack Snyder squashes ongoing rumors that Justice League 2 in the works.
There’s no truth to rumors that Justice League 2 is in the works, director Zack Snyder says. As of now, the filmmaker is busy manning reshoots and additional work for his cut of the Justice League movie, but before it even hits HBO Max, there’s already speculations that a follow-up will soon be announced.
For context, Snyder’s original plan for the DCEU was a five-film narrative that started with 2013’s Man of Steel. It’s followed by Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and three Justice League installments. However, the divisive response to his earlier films effectively changed his initial story breakdown and with Justice League theatrical cut being significantly different from what he envisioned it to be, chances of this actually materializing are slim. Still, with Snyder’s Justice League coming to HBO Max, some may be holding out hope that there will be a sequel to it after he made comments that he has it all plotted out. Unfortunately, the filmmaker denied this.

Speaking with Ping Pong Flix, Snyder acknowledged speculation for a Justice League 2 and revealed that it would be great to have that opportunity, but he’s not banking on it. That said, he’s proud that the DCEU he started continues to thrive, with the superheroes introduced in Justice League getting their own standalone movies.
“I don’t have any expectation that there would be more movies than this. If that happened, that would be amazing — but that bridge is far away. Frankly I’m cool.
“Listen, you have Wonder Woman, you have Aquaman, you have this new Flash movie. All of these are branches from a tree that I planted a long time ago. I couldn’t be prouder, I couldn’t be more excited about what’s happening with Wonder Woman 1984. It’s amazing, those talented people. Patty is a genius and Gal is the greatest Wonder Woman ever. Any time those guys add a chapter to the world, it’s great, but for me, I have a very singular vision of how my track is supposed to go.”
Snyder has a point; while his future with the DCEU is bleak past his new Justice League project, the franchise will always have his fingerprints all over it thanks to his casting choices. He was the creative force behind choosing all six actors to play members of the League, and while Affleck is officially out of the universe, most of the rest have a bright future in the film series. Aside from the already-established characters like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, Flash will soon get his own solo adventure that could also feature Cyborg. What’s interesting here, however, is that there is still no clear path for Superman moving forward with Man of Steel 2 unannounced. It’s uncertain if Warner Bros. has something for Henry Cavill in the future, but one would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t want to see more of him as Superman.
It’s worth noting that while the Justice League Snyder Cut is finally releasing, its events are supposedly not DCEU canon. So, even if the filmmaker gets the chance to move forward with Justice League 2, it’s possible that it won’t carry over to what’s happening in the main franchise. Nevertheless, since the HBO Max project has a longer runtime, Snyder can simply tell his full story through it so there won’t be any need for a sequel.
