There are numerous different types of ghosts in the new hit horror game Phasmophobia, all of them terrifying. Here’s who they were before they died.
The indie hit Phasmophobia is quickly becoming one of the most popular ghost-hunter games of all time. Now, it is true that there aren’t very many ghost games out there in general, but it is nevertheless the case that Phasmophobia has been rapidly growing in popularity. With that growing popularity has come an increased interest in the lore of the game. Many gamers are no doubt now asking one important question – who were Phasmophobia’s ghosts before they died? Were they important?
An indie co-op title released by Kinetic games, Phasmophobia was first made available for early access on Steam on September 18, 2020. Phasmophobia’s gameplay puts four online players into the roles of paranormal investigators as they try to find, identify, and capture evidence of the existence of ghosts at various haunted locations.

There are twelve different types of ghosts (and demons) in Phasmophobia. An in-game paranormal investigator journal gives players several brief descriptions of each of these ghosts and their features, although the specific history of how these spirits became paranormal apparitions is left unexplained. However, a little bit of research outside of the game into the mythological history and nature of each of these ghosts reveals who, or what, they were before they died.
Phasmophobia’s Ghosts Are Either Normal People, Murder Victims or Evil Entities
The ghosts in Phasmophobia tend to fall in one of two different categories. Either they were just average people who lived a normal life, or they were never really human to begin with. Spirits, Wraiths, and Phantoms in Phasmophobia are examples of these kinds of human ghosts.
Many of the apparitions players encounter in the world of Phasmophobia used to be normal, everyday people. What made these normal folk become ghosts upon their deaths was the fact that many of them had unresolved circumstances plaguing their lives at the time of passing. Feeling the need to resolve those issues, their spirits remained tethered to earth. Other ghosts in Phasmophobia are murder victims or suicide victims who died suddenly and violently, which causes those spirits to lash out much more maliciously than others.
Then there are the other entities in Phasmophobia that were never people to begin with. These ghosts are evil beings that had always existed in the same, malevolent forms that they appear in within the world of the game. This category of monster includes demons, jinn, and oni, which are some of the most dangerous ghosts that players can encounter in Phasmophobia.
As Phasmophobia continues to grow in popularity, so does its lore. Over time, the developers of the indie game will no doubt add to this backstory, or at the very least expand on it down the road in some sort of sequel. Either way, whether the developers deepen the game’s plot or not, Phasmophobia will continue to be one of the most captivating horror games of 2020.
