Catherine O’Hara, who played Kevin McCallister’s mom in the Christmas classic Home Alone movies, recreates her iconic scream from the second film.
Home Alone star Catherine O’Hara, who plays Kevin’s mom, recreated her iconic scream from the second film. Macaulay Culkin stars in both films as mischievous grade-schooler Kevin McCallister, who is accidentally left alone by his family during their Christmas vacation. In Home Alone, Kevin must defend his house against the notorious Wet Bandits (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). In its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Kevin accidentally boards a plane to New York City and finds his old foes out of jail and looking for revenge. It’s a wacky premise, but the lessons Kevin learns about not taking his family for granted and his mother’s determination to reunite with her son reinforce a heartwarming message of familial love that suits the holiday very well.

Both films are Christmas classics that are rerun daily every holiday season. Even 30 years after the original’s release, Culkin dons a mask resembling his iconic aftershave scream. It’s tough to strike gold with a Christmas film in a sea of so many, but the Home Alone films were destined for success, directed by Chris Columbus from a script by John Hughes. The two separately created many of the films that defined the 1980s, so their collaborative Christmas films were bound to satisfy. By a strange turn of events, the second film is now perhaps doubly famous for featuring a cameo by future president Donald Trump.
Just in time for the holiday reruns, an O’Hara fan account shared a side-by-side video on Instagram of her recreating her most famous moment in the sequel. O’Hara’s character always finds out too late that they’ve forgotten Kevin, and once she understands that he’s missing – again – she looks straight at the camera, screams his name, and faints. O’Hara has previously said that fans always ask her to scream “Kevin” for them.
The Instagram post is a snippet from Josh Gad’s “Reunited Apart” YouTube series. As a little quarantine project, Gad would bring the casts of various classics together via Zoom to discuss the films or, in this case, recreate parts of it. O’Hara’s performance was part of a tribute to writer Hughes, who also wrote and directed the likes of The Breakfast Club and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Sadly, Hughes passed away in 2009, but his legacy is impressive.
The greatest compliment Hollywood can pay a classic is to attempt to remake it, and Disney is doing just that with Home Alone. Jojo Rabbit’s Archie Yates is set for the lead alongside Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2) in new roles and an entirely new creative team. Director Columbus has already come out to call it a “waste of time.” As the holiday season rolls around again, at least we can always enjoy the originals.
