The official PlayStation Twitter account has confirmed that more PS5 units will be available to purchase from retailers by the end of the year.
The hunt for a PlayStation 5 will soon be easier, as Sony has confirmed that more consoles are coming by the end of the year. It’s currently near-impossible to buy a PS5 without incredible luck or paying ludicrous prices to scalpers for a system, as Sony has sold all of its stock to retailers globally due to unprecedented player demand.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are releasing under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The ability to manufacture, assemble and ship consoles has been slowed considerably by real-world events. As such, the initial waves of both systems are smaller than Microsoft and Sony would have liked. The PS5’s pre-order situation was particularly bad, as some retailers opened their pre-orders early, leading to chaos that only benefited scalpers. Sony has since apologized for the pre-order situation and promised that more orders are on the way.

The official PlayStation Twitter account has uploaded a post about the current supply situation. The post thanks all of the fans for the PS5 having the biggest PlayStation launch of all time before confirming that more PS5s will be sent to retailers before the end of the year, so Sony recommends that customers keep their eyes peeled for extra stock.
We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever. Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year – please stay in touch with your local retailers.

The PS5 supply situation has been dire since pre-orders first went up. It’s good to hear that more systems are finally making their way into the wild. Fans will now need to follow-up with retailers, in order to know exactly what times the systems will be available. The Xbox Series X/s launch managed to avoid a lot of the issues of the PS5 launch by laying out the pre-order times beforehand, so people knew when to be online, but that approach had its own caveats and Microsoft’s consoles ultimately fell victim to impossibly high launch demand.
It’s going to be a struggle to purchase a PS5 over the next twelve months, as demand for the console is outstripping the supply, and Sony is having issues shipping more units. This is tough for parents who are trying to buy a system for their kids this holiday season, especially with 2020 being such a difficult year for everyone. There will be a lot of temptation to fork cash over to a scalper, but people looking for a PS5 should hold off a little longer, as there will be more ethical opportunities to purchase a system before 2020’s fateful end.
