Barbara Walters wasn’t afraid to get brutally frank back in 2011. Now, her remark is going viral on Vine, as the KUWTK family deals with backlash.
The reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians is coming to an end after 14 years, and Barbara Walters’ old jab that the family has “no talent” is currently going viral on Vine. In 2011, Kourtney, Khloé, and Kim were rising to fame, and they were interviewed by Barbara Walters. During that sitdown, Walters made the famous comment about their lack of talent. The Kardashians responded in a calm and relatable way.
The Kardashian family began their journey towards fame, status, and success in 2007. During that year, the reality series about their family began. In addition to being television superstars due to KUWTK, the Kardashians have started their own retail companies, dominated social media, and become fashion trendsetters. Even though they’re prosperous, the Kardashians are often criticized for having no talent. Unlike other celebrities, they don’t sing, they don’t dance, and they don’t perform. Nonetheless, they’ve become extremely influential. Barbara Walters is a seasoned television journalist, author, and media personality. and she interviewed the Kardashian family about a decade ago. Throughout Walters’ career, she would compile a list of the “10 Most Fascinating People” every year. The Kardashians (specifically Kourtney, Khloé, and Kim), made the top 10 list in 2011. During their interview with Barbara, the topic of their talent (or lack thereof) came up.

The 2011 special episode hosted by Barbara began with a collage of scenes from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, according to Cheat Sheet. “The Kardashians are everywhere,” Walters said over the series of clips. “Their empire endlessly self-replicating, with spinoff after spinoff. A strange mix of trashy s**, upscale excess, tabloid melodrama and suburban family life.” After the introductions, Barbara got right down to business. She said, “You are all often described as ‘famous for being famous’. You don’t really act, you don’t sing, you don’t dance. You don’t have any – forgive me – any talent.” Khloé was the first to respond to the statement, “But we’re still entertaining people.” Kim chimed in next, “I think it’s more of a challenge for you to go on a reality show and get people to fall in love with you for being you. So there is definitely a lot more pressure, I think, to be famous for being ourselves.” The three Kardashian sisters didn’t seem to be offended by Walters’ statement. “None of us think we have talents,” Khloé said. Now, the legendary moment is going viral on Vine, and fans and haters alike can see the Vine in question here:
The remainder of the episode covered other topics, including Kim’s infamous sex tape. Shortly after the interview, Barbara said that the Kardashians had held back information during her interview with them. She revealed this during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. “They were the first ones we interviewed and we did them in September,” Walters told Letterman in 2011. “We said, ‘Anything going to happen?’ ‘No no no, you can do it now because nothing’s going to happen.’ Then Kim gets married. Then Kourtney gets pregnant, then Khloe’s moving to Dallas. You cannot trust the Kardashians.”
Obviously, the Kardashians don’t have any type of traditional showbiz talent and they agree that this is true, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have any talent at all. In fact, what the Kardashians are particularly skilled at is management. They all manage their images and personal brands and manage each other. Arguably, they’ve attained power by working together. In addition, they’re skilled at remaining calm during high-pressure moments, such as public scandals. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians crew has created a whole new type of celebrity and that definitely takes talent.
