Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto 5’s online mode, GTA Online, is coming to next-gen consoles as a standalone product in 2021.
Rockstar Games’ massively popular open world crime game Grand Theft Auto 5 found continuing success with its GTA Online multiplayer mode, and now GTA Online will be releasing as a standalone product in 2021. Although a large number of Grand Theft Auto fans have been scouring both GTA 5 and GTA Online hoping to find clues relating to Grand Theft Auto 6 for the better part of a decade, it seems like, at least publicly, the developers are far more interested in keeping GTA Online fresh for its many, many players.
A new standalone version of GTA Online isn’t the only new thing coming to Rockstar’s flagship title. GTA Online recently announced their biggest update ever, a new heist located in a brand-new island map location not previously available in GTA 5. This new Grand Theft Auto heist, dubbed the Cayo Perico heist, seems to be exactly what GTA 6 rumors have been pointing towards – an island location filled with drug trafficking and new content. When GTA Online launches as a standalone title, it will include every update that has come to the game so far.

Although Rockstar Games has not revealed an exact release date for the standalone version of GTA Online yet, they have announced that it will be coming in 2021, specifically in the second half of the year. While six months is still a pretty big launch window, by looking at past releases of Grand Theft Auto games it’s possible to make some educated guesses about what month GTA Online’s standalone game will drop.
When GTA Games Usually Release
Rockstar has a clear pattern when releasing Grand Theft Auto games and their expansions. While games like Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, Grand Theft Auto: London 1961, and Grand Theft Auto 4 all released in April of their respective years, the majority of GTA games tend to come out in October. This includes the original Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony.
Grand Theft Auto 5 released in September (the first time) and April (the second time) but thanks to Rockstar‘s statement about “the second half of 2021” it’s entirely possible, and, judging from past patterns, quite likely, that the game’s third console generation release will be in October. GTA Online‘s standalone game will likely be made available to players in October as well, since it is expected to launch alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Grand Theft Auto 5’s base game.
With both GTA Online standalone and Grand Theft Auto 5 releasing in the second half of 2021, it’s very unlikely fans will be getting GTA 6 next year. While this may be disappointing news for some players, at least they can look forward to new graphical enhancements (and all the new content in the Cayo Perico heist, among others) when Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online standalone launches.
